CAPTAIN’S ISLAND

Located within the Captain’s Island community in Charleston, this home was shaped by the presence of two protected trees at the center of the lot. Preserving them required a site specific response that ultimately defined the organization of the project. The house and garage are separated to create a central courtyard where the trees become the focal point of the arrival and entry experience.

A contemporary interpretation of the traditional Lowcountry front porch frames this courtyard, offering shade while celebrating the preserved canopy. Once inside, the home opens toward expansive marsh views beyond the property. As one moves through the interior, the trees remain a constant reference point. A light filled stair leads to the second floor where elevated views look out across the canopy, reinforcing the home’s close relationship to its landscape.
